Grayslake Cleanup 2015Underwater Clean up at Jones Island Park – Getting The Job Done

The clean up at Grayslake Jones Island Park on Saturday, June 6th, turned out to be a wonderful diving opportunity.  The entire event was put together by the Grayslake Community Park District.  Jeff Nehila was our contact person, who helped set up the event, and provided the opportunity to help out.  We were not only able to help out our local community, but we got to have some fun along the way.  The diving is quite shallow, and presented some rigorous challenges to the divers.  Entries, and exits could be trying at times, and, of course the visibility is not particularly good.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen the PADI Muck Diving Specialty.  But there are some divers out there that certainly could possibly apply for the certification, if it exists.  Not every diver there was interested in showing off their civil responsibilities, only.  There are treasures lying on the lake bottom, along with the trash.  The object was finding the trash, and getting it out of the lake, but in doing so, line one’s pockets (BCD pockets, that is), with swag.

Clean Up Or Meet Up

In that many of the divers were involved with the clean up, we had many other divers come out to visit.  Everyone wanted to see what all the excitement was about.  There were pizzas, bread sticks, and snacks for all of the dive volunteers.  There were giveaways, t shirts, and hats.  There were prizes for the most garbage, and the most interesting garbage selections.  This year’s most interesting item found, was a brass sun dial.  It was very cool!  It resides, now, at the Toucan Dive Shop.  So stop by, and check it out.

All in all, everyone came out a winner.  We got to do something nice for the community, and have a lot of fun in the trying.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity to join Toucan Dive, and the Grayslake Community Park District next year, as we go for the gold.  You can feed your mercenary leanings with treasure, and have a great time.  Check out the fun we had below:
