Divers preparing pumpkins for the underwater carving

Young divers getting their pumpkins ready for the carve

The Underwater Pumpkin Carve and Treasure Hunt at Pearl Lake, was a fantastic event. It was put together by Toucan Dive, to show its appreciation to all the divers that continually support the shop.  It also allowed Toucan Dive to give the proceeds from the event to the Diveheart Foundation.  There were 85 divers and friends that came out with Toucan Dive, to have fun, carve pumpkins, look for swag and leave with their bellies full.  No one was disappointed.

The Weather

The morning started off as a brisk fall day.  The weather did not disappoint as well.  It was gorgeous. This pumpkin carve outing hit it just right with a beautiful, sunny, day in Autumn.  The trees were decorated in their beautiful fall coats of spectacular color.  The water temperatures nurtured our divers as they carved their pumpkins, staying  in the mid sixties or so, with great visibility.

The pumpkin carve started when divers came out, grabbed pumpkins, and went about cleaning and drawing their designs on the designated picnic tables.  After gearing up, divers proceeded to get in the water and carve their designs in the pumpkins with dive knives.  Jim Elliott, founder of Diveheart, was there to judge the winner.  Congratulations to all the divers for their great designs, and to Ben Short, who took the prize for best pumpkin.

Pumpkin Carve Is About Food And Prizes

Upon completion of the judging, everyone set upon lunch, literally attacking those deep fried turkeys with a vengeance.  There was plenty for all, which was important.  Divers still had more work to accomplish, afterwards, by finding their plastic treasure jack O lanterns, that were scattered about the bottom in the shallows at Pearl Lake.  Upon completion of the dive, all the special prizes were handed out, including two dive computers from both Aqua Lung, and Oceanic, and an argon regulator setup from DUI.  A fantastic time was had by all.  A special thanks to all those that assisted in making the underwater pumpkin carve a success,  including all our wonderful dive manufacturers who provided the awesome prizes.  Also very special thank you’s for Linda Wallace and Jaime Musgrave for all their hard work in making this event come together.

Diveheart Foundation and Their Mission

The proceeds from our underwater pumpkin carve were donated to Diveheart.  Diveheart’s mission statement is to “build confidence and independence in children, adults and veterans with disabilities through the sport of scuba diving”.  The Toucan group wanted to assist with this fun event.   More can be learned about this wonderful foundation, and how you can assist, by going to their website at http://www.diveheart.org/
