Dive Into Statia 2025!

Statia is the familiar term for the island of St. Eustatius!  This very small isle is not a normal destination for most. Most folks have never even heard of the place! However, Statia is a very amazing locale for divers!  The diving in Statia is totally a unique experience!  For one, the coral reef continually builds itself upon volcanic beds from the once active volcano,“The Quill”.  Spur and groove areas provide ledges and other hiding places for all the wild life!  Large schools of grunts, yellowtail, black durgeon and other reef fish abound!  Turtles, nurse sharks, morays, and  southern stingrays populate the reef and wrecks!  Statia, overall, is not a tourist destination, so the reefs are pristine and beautiful!

Setting apart Statia from other dive destinations are the incredible amount of wrecks and artifacts littering the bommies and sandy areas of the reef.  Once a thriving shipping port, Statia, at any given time, would have hundreds of ships in its bays.  In the 1600s and 1700s the slave trade was thriving in the Caribbean and the Americas!  Over this period of time it is believed that over twelve million slaves arrived in Statia from West Africa!  So there are wrecks!  Lots of wrecks! They appear on almost every dive!  Certain reefs carry aged anchors and cannon of old, unnamed vessels!  Old bottles from centuries past can be found lying near these ancient museums! We will even spend some time searching for blue slave beads that were thrown into the ocean with the slaves were emancipated. The unspoiled reefs and wrecks go back to the very beginning of the Americas!

The Accommodations

Toucan Dive will be staying at the Old Gin House, a faithful reconstruction of an 18th century building that once housed a cotton gin! Built of old bricks used by sailing ships as ballast, this landmark is surrounded by bougainvillea and palm trees in a tropical garden setting. Nondivers will enjoy the rich Dutch ambiance of this island as well!  The whole island is basically  a historic landmark!  Tours of the island, and the volcano, The Quill are available as well as an island museum.
