Dive Roatan with ToucanRoatan, Honduras An Island Paradise

Roatan is one of the few islands in the Caribbean that retains its own special kind of island charm.  People are wonderful and pleasant to all newcomers.  Unlike other islands in the Caribbean, it has more of a quiet, sleepy feel to the island.  Initial reactions can sometimes be misleading however.  Besides the incredible diving, exciting and exotic excursions attract many non divers as well.  For example, one can see literally thousands of iguanas at the Iguana Park at French Cay.   Engaging macaws and capuchin monkeys await visitors as they tour the  Gumbalimba Park.  One can spend an entire day viewing the lush, tropical gardens.  There are over 200 types of plant species among the dense foliage that await one’s viewing.  For those that wish for adventure in the evening, the West End of Roatan has much night life with bars, and cantinas.  Incredibly, besides live music, some establishments even have karaoke!  The nightlife is anything but sleepy!

Roatan Diving

Roatan is a 33 mile island surrounded by lush and beautiful reefs that are part of the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world.  The warm, turquoise water turns cobalt as the shallow reef drops off into deep blue.  Besides having the largest variety of coral and sponges in the Caribbean, dive sites offer canyons and dropoffs with incredible marine life.  The walls start shallow and drop off below 100 ft!  These are the homes of the eagle ray and barracuda.  However, it is not unusual to see turtles meandering along the walls devouring sponges along the reef!  Schools of grunts and yellowtail hide amongst the elkhorn coral heads.  The wreck of the Prince Albert near the resort reef, is home to a species of seahorse.  Clearly, this is an exciting addition for underwater photographers in pursuit of incredible wild life.
