Lake Superior Wreck Diver perusing the deck of The wreck of The BermudaLake Superior Wreck Diving – Why?

Lake Superior, and in particular Munising has some fantastic wreck diving!  Most of the scuba diving is within the recreational dive limit.  Both new and advanced divers will qualify for these wrecks.  Most of the wrecks are very close to shore so the actual boat time to get to  these wrecks is minimized.  Another interesting variable, is that unlike the rest of the Great Lakes, due to the tannin in the water, there are no zebra muscles on the wrecks.  That being said, zebra muscles have done a great job in cleaning up the algae in the Great Lakes.  Because of this, the visibility in the rest of the Great Lakes is excellent.  The visibility in Lake Superior is well, superior!  It doesn’t need zebra muscles to keep the algae bloom down.  The visibility can be up to 100 ft.  So the wreck diving in Lake Superior is pretty awesome.

Great Wrecks

Some of the wrecks are artificial reef systems that have been intentionally sunk.  However, some of Lake Superior’s wrecks carry their legacy, and loss.  On some of these wrecks, there have been great loss of life.  Peoples lives, dreams and futures have been dashed, as these wrecks ran aground, and were smashed by the savage rocks along the coast.  Wrecks with the names of the Bermuda, The Smith Moore, and The Steven M. Selvick beg us to bring clarity to their lives.  Most of these wrecks are old, wooden,  barges and schooners, that sank between the mid 1800’s through the late 20’s.  We as divers, can visit these pieces of history, and see how the building of ships has changed in modern times.  Lake Superior has wrecks that have a heritage, and pedigree, that makes them very unique.  This is why, we as divers wish to visit them.  Lake Superior wreck photographer taking a shot on the Bermuda
